ivaylo yordanov asked:

Berne is perhaps the most popular city in the country and also its capital. Its Old Town is a protected heritage site by UNESCO and both its parts (western and eastern) are very beautiful. One can visit the Cathedral of St. Vincent (The Münster) from the 15th century. There you can see an outstanding tympanum over the main door, which depicts the Last Judgment and has more than 200 figures. Also interesting is the Bundeshaus – the Federal Palace in Renaissance style. A landmark of the town is Zytgloggeturm (Clock Tower), dating back to the 12th century. Four minutes before every hour, lost of mechanical puppets make a great show for the crowd around the clock. Other places worth visiting are Kunstmuseum (Fine Arts Museum), Botanischer Garten (Botanical Garden), Nydegg Castle, Kindlifresserbrunnen (Ogre Fountain) and more.

Zurich is also a very popular place in Switzerland – the largest city and the capital of the Zurich canton. Its Old Town is very beautiful, located on the banks of the Limmat River with lots of medieval buildings and narrow streets. If you like nature you can go to the Zoologischer Garten (Zoological Garden) and the Botanischer Garten (Zurich Botanic Garden). The Botanical Garden contains more than 15 000 living plants and its herbarium has the amazing 3 million plants. One should not miss the beautiful Grossmünster Cathedral – some parts of it dating from the 11th century. Its 3 storey towers also offer some gorgeous views of the city. Schloss Kyburg is also a recommended place – the biggest castle in the eastern part of the country. It now houses a museum with art and armor from the Middle Ages. You can also visit the Urania Observatory, Landesmuseum (Swiss National Museum), Uetliberg and many more.

Geneve yet another important centre in Switzerland, located in its south-western part. The city is near Lake Geneva, between the Alps and the Jura Mountains. Palais des Nations houses the headquarters of the United Nations and is the second largest building in Europe. It is open for visit and there are guided tours available. Just across the entrance you will find another interesting place – the Musée International de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge (International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum). There you will experience the history of the Red Cross from its founding in 1863 till present times. Maison Tavel is the oldest house in Geneva (14th century) and is now open as a museum. From Mont Salève and Mont Blanc one can enjoy some amazing views of Geneve and its surroundings.

Last but not least, Basle is another city from the Euro 2008. The settlement is very old and is still the most important cultural centre of Switzerland. It is located on the Rhine River, surrounded by the Jura Mountains. In Basel there are numerous galleries and museums, but you can go to Kunstmuseum (Fine Arts Museum), Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Museum for Contemporary Art), Foundation Beyeler (a gallery of modern art), Historisches Museum Barfüsserplatz and Kunsthalle (also a gallery). Spalentor (Spalen Gate) is a gate from the 15th century which marks the end of the medieval part of the city. Münster (Basel Cathedral) is also very popular, built in the 11th century. It offers some beautiful views of the Rhine River, Germany and Pfalz (the palace).

This is where my list of nice places to visit in Switzerland ends. Of course, there are numerous other interesting sites in the country – one could say that every corner of Switzerland is beautiful. I do hope I was helpful to those who would like to see more than the football games.

Holidays and Travel in Switzerland
Robert asked:

To maintain the magical allure of the place, the city required 40% of each house to be made of wood. There are steep gorges and high mountainsides on the road to this village. And when you reach the Saas Fee ski resort, you immediately observe one amazing thing - there are no cars. The private vehicles that were brought in by visitors are safely parked at the village entrance. There is also one other thing that you immediately learn, the Saas Fee is one of the most popular world’s favorite snowboarding slopes. But you are not here for snowboarding. You are open to the idea of learning to ski but you are quite sure that you will have your behind sore sooner than when you can figure out how to balance the skis.

Your friend appeared ecstatic when you arrived. He loved the snow, which is strange because he grew up in a city that doesn’t have true winters. He explained that at this moment, he is suffering from SDS or snow deprivation syndrome. After rolling your eyes, you asked him if there are other things to do besides skiing. Saas Fee is a celebrated destination for winter holidays, he claimed. Of course, there are many other things to do, such as ice climbing, canyon climbing, and snowshoe trekking. You hoped that he would say something that is not related to ice. But this is a ski resort after all. You might as well take care of the logistics and accommodations.

The Saas Fee ski resort is well equipped to respond to the needs of all its visitors and skiers. There are more than 20 lifts that included cable cars, gondolas, chairlifts, draglifts, and funicular railway. Solo skiers, pairs, and groups of skiers have a wide choice of lifts that will take them to the starting points of the ski trails. You had second thoughts about skiing when you learned that the vertical drop of the ski run is almost 6,000 feet. This fact simply thrilled your friend. Seeing your face, he immediately assured you that both of you will stick to the green circle - the easiest type of slopes for alpine skiing.

The accommodations at Saas Fee are varied. There are luxurious five-star hotels and affordable one-star hotels. There are also holiday apartments that are managed by local families. And then, for the more adventurous travelers, there are numerous well-kept camping sites. Beyond the Saas Valley, there are more hotels and apartments. But you preferred staying in a hotel that is as high as possible because you look forward to dining in the highest revolving restaurant and watching the glittering diamond-like lights from the distant city of Milan.

The Saas Fee has other tourist attractions aside from the spectacular peaks, glaciers, and snow slopes. It also has the Allalin Ice Pavilion. Instead of skiing above the snow, the visitors will be amazed by the glaciers. There is also the Alpin Gorge that challenged visitors to conquer their fear of heights, hold on to the rope route, and cross the bridge. There is also the Adventure Park for those who love climbing. And there is the Feeblitz Toboggan Run. For you, one of the most attractive features is the 300 kilometers of themed walking paths. You wish to encounter the adorable marmots. Are you ready to ski? Your friend asked. You sighed and nodded your head.

Tags: E111 Form, European Health Insurance Card, Hundreds Of Miles

Holidays and Travel in Switzerland
Michael Challiner asked:

Hands up all those who remember the old E111 medical forms you were supposed to have if you travelled in Europe? I can see all those blank faces!

Well, great news is that it doesn’t matter any more. The E111 form was replaced at the beginning of January 2006 by a new European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

This EHIC is valid for up to 5 years and entitles you to the same level of medical care in the country you’re travelling in, as would be enjoyed by the residents of that country. The card covers discounted and free medical care including emergency treatment, and applies to all the EEC countries plus Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. But be aware that the treatment you’re entitled to might not include all the treatments you get free of charge under the National Health Service here in Britain.

Nevertheless, we believe that it’s wise to carry a EHIC as it could save you time, money and a great deal of hassle if you’re unlucky enough to need medical attention. It can cut through some of the inevitable red tape you’d be faced with if you were relying just on the medical provisions of your travel insurance policy.

You should also be aware that in many areas of Europe, the best medical attention is still reserved for those with private insurance cover. Private insurance bypasses the long queues of local residents waiting patently in inhospitable corridors - after all who wants to spend days of their holiday not only ill, but queuing as well!

Another point is that nationalised health care is only available at nationalised hospitals which, in some countries, are hundreds of miles apart. They tend to be located where the local population work and live - not where you enjoy your holidays! Therefore, you may be a long way from the nearest nationalised hospital whereas private medical and dental clinics are to be found in many tourist areas catering primarily for holidaymakers. Their standard is usually good albeit in local terms, they’re expensive.

Whilst we’ve been discussing medical care, don’t forget that private travel insurance covers you for much more than just medical expenses. Most policies will even pay for you to be flown home to the UK if you’re really ill. Holiday cancellation (due to prior illness), holiday curtailment, loss of luggage or individual items are all aspects normally covered by the insurance.

To be as safe as possible, we recommend that all travellers get a European Health Insurance Card and comprehensive travel insurance. After all, you’ve saved up for ages for the holiday and if something goes wrong the last thing you want is to be worried about the financial implications.

As with most insurance, the best travel insurance bargains are to be found on the Internet. Search on your favourite search engine for “travel insurance”. The brokers usually provide the best value for money as they will have access to a wide range of insurance providers and can pick the best for you. You can try the sites run by the individual insurance companies but they’ll only offer you one option - their policy! A broker can offer you a range of solutions.

We say, no matter how you arrange it, get travel insurance and get peace of mind.

Information about the European Health Insurance Card

The European Health Insurance Card is free from any Post Office or by phoning the Department of Health on 0845 606 2030. You can also apply online at the web site run by the Department of Health. The web address is www.dh.gov.uk/travellers

Holidays and Travel in Switzerland
Amanda Thompson asked:

Work… Work… Work… gives you lot of tensions and stress. Need relief? Just travel around the beautiful places like Hawaii, Sydney, Switzerland, Egypt or some other beautiful destinations of the world. This will help you get rid of all your tensions and anxiety. The number of tourists moving around the world has been showing a progress as compared to last year’s statistics. So why should you be left out of the fun of traveling. And if you are facing the problem of finance, holiday loans are here at your service with low interest rates.

Holiday loans are loans for holidaying or traveling. Holiday loans are personal loans. Personal loans are loans for catering to your personal needs and holidaying is something personal to you and your family.

Before applying for any such loan, you must decide on the following important issues:

• The places you want to travel

• The funds you can invest from your side

• Funds you need to borrow.

You can apply for a secured holiday loan against a security. The interest rate will be low as you are offering your asset to the lender as a security. The repayments options are also quite flexible. However if you are lacking any collateral or don’t want to put your asset at a stake then you can apply for an unsecured holiday loan. It will give you the freedom from the tension of repossession of your asset at a slightly higher interest rate.

People with bad credit history also have a high approval rate for these loans. So you don’t have to worry, if your past record is troubling you with the thought of getting denied from taking a holiday loan. You are eligible for such loans if you are salaried person, employed, self-employed, unemployed, retired or a housewife etc. So you need not to worry about your status for getting these loans.

Holiday loans are generally short-term loans. The time for repayment of these loans lies around 3 to 10 years. And the loan amount ranges from ¤3000 to ¤25000.

With dozens of sites offering you the platform to compare packages offered by different lenders, it is not much difficult to choose the right lender. You can select the one, which will be providing you the package to suit your needs. Certain holiday loan lenders will also provide you the information about where to stay, what are the places to see there, they will also arrange cabs for you to travel at local areas.

Holiday loans are becoming popular because of their easy availability and low interest rates. So if you are looking for seeing this beautiful world in real, which you have seen earlier in pictures or on televsion, you can take the help of holiday loans for the fulfillments of your desires.

Holidays and Travel in Switzerland
David R HUghes asked:

A European luxury holiday is truly an experience nobody should miss. Europe and luxury are synonymous, and their adjectives are many: exquisite, magnificent, fine, graceful and elegant. A European luxury holiday would spoil any tourist. The charms of Italy and the elegance of France are sought by many a veteran traveller.

To make the most of your European holiday, experience all the charms that are Europe. Some of the best places in Europe, if you are seeking true luxury are Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Croatia and Cyprus. Of course, you should never miss travelling to Switzerland and indulge in their world famous chocolates.

If you are travelling to Spain, you are bound to figure out some way or the other to enjoy your day. Everything in Spain is colourful and fun. Participate in a local fiesta (festival) to get the real feel of el vivo de Español. Spanish food is also a very rich experience. Tapas are a unique assortment of food that comes with your drinks in cafes. They are also served as appetizers before a meal. These are of many kinds, ranging from olives and cheese to seafood.

Then, you should try to catch up with the Spanish art. Works of great masters like Picasso and Goya are displayed in the Miró Foundation in Barcelona. Also, if you are lucky enough, you might visit when there is a football match. You should not miss a football match – after all, Madrid has the top football team. No football match going on? Venture into a Bull fighting arena for this great classic Spanish spectacle. Also, beaches are numerous in Spain. Hire a motorbike and take a drive along one at night to experience what heaven is like. Spain is also great for just lazing around and people-watching. Simply order a coffee and sit outside one of the many cafes.

Travelling to Italy is another magical experience when on holiday in Europe - fine food, finer wine and the best places to see. You cannot visit Italy without calling in to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa or venturing to the Roman ruins. See the whole area – old, but still standing in its own magnificence. The coliseum still stands out, and tells tales of all the great gladiators it has seen.

The wines of Tuscany are especially good, and you should never leave Italy without sampling them. Any romantic escapade to Italy also demands a visit to Venice. Although the streets may be a bit crowded, the whole concept of floating through a city is so enchanting that you will simply be captivated.

Your next stop – France. The travelling mantra says you should visit the Eiffel Tower. Besides that, experience the fine art at the world famous art museum of Paris, Louvre. Also worth every effort of yours is the Notre Dame Cathedral. And, no one can visit France without sampling the fine light croissants and the special cuisine by the famous chefs.

Founded more than a century ago, Kuoni Travel Ltd offers holidays to some superb up-market destinations, such as top sought-after European destinations, such as those of Switzerland and Italy, adventurous locations, such as Kenya, and the more long-haul resorts such as those of Thailand and the Maldives. If you want to see the wonderful Renaissance art of Italy, then Kuoni can take you to Florence, where you can admire the beautiful Greek-inspired statues, or to Venice where you can float on the canals, while gazing at the great architecture.

With turquoise-blue waters and exquisite beaches of soft white sand, the idyllic Maldives offer the last word in luxury beach holidays, and Kuoni Holidays are available to no less than forty of these stunning islands. Now becoming popular are island resorts that are luxury villages of sumptuous water villas, which offer your own private beach. Many of the Maldives resorts now offer spa and beauty treatments too, so you can truly be pampered.

Another of Kuoni’s popular destinations is Thailand, the Land of Smiles. With its fascinating culture, you can take in the magnificent Buddhist temples of Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and you can relax the cares away on the beautiful beaches of Phuket, or Ko Samui. Not only that, Thailand is also renowned the world over for its mouth-watering cuisine, which offers fresh ingredients, delightful flavours and scents of coconut, and definitely a bit of spice.

But one of the most exciting places to visit at the moment is the very up-and-coming city of Dubai, which has rapidly become the last word in luxury hotels. Kuoni offer you a stunning array of more than thirty Dubai hotels, including the Hilton Dubai Jumeirah Resort, The Sheraton Deira, and the Burj Al Arab, which with its fantastic Islamic architecture, has become one of Dubai’s famous landmarks.

A must for anyone visiting the region, once a bustling fishing port famous for the herring and mackerel. The impressive harbour dates back to the 14th Century with many beautiful cottages. An area famed for smuggling, offering the visitors a chance to stand in the cobbled streets and use their imagination !

Bideford

Once considered the most important Port in England, second to London. Today Bideford sits tranquilly on the banks of the Torridge, it’’s bridge spanning the water. Sit and while away a few hours taking a coffee along the quayside.

Now a very popular place to spend New Year’’s Eve.

Great Torrington

Perched on a ridge overlooking the River Torridge the Cavalier town of Torrington was the site of the last major conflict of the English Civil War. The home of Dartington Crystal and the fabulous Rosemoor Gardens. Enjoy a unique attraction where costumed characters take you back to the 17th century.

Ilfracombe

A traditional Victorian resort where you can enjoy a stroll on the promenade and browse the souvenir shops. The quaint harbour with numerous fishing vessels, not to mention the Oldenburg where either day cruising or sunset cruising along the coastline towards Lynton and Lynmouth can be enjoyed.

Instow

Well worth a stop on the Tarka Trail where you can take a leisurely boat trip across the estuary to the ancient free port of Appledore. Maybe spend the day on the beach messing around in the sand dunes and have lunch in one of the pubs or restaurants overlooking the Bay.

Lundy Island

About 11 miles from the North Devon Coast in the Bristol Channel the island is three miles long and half a mile wide. It rises 400 feet above sea level and is an amazing area of outstanding natural beauty. Lundy abounds with wild life, Sika deer, Lundy ponies, Soay sheep, Basking sharks and dolphins. Birds so rare that they bring bird watchers to the Island from all over Britain. Trips to Lundy are available via the Oldenburg departing from Bideford and Barnstaple. Details are available locally.

Lynton and Lynmouth

Always spoken of together and often referred to as North Devon’’s answer to Switzerland. The Victorian powered cliff railway connects the two beautiful villages and a ride on the railway between the two is almost compulsory.

Barnstaple

Decked in flowers and the nearest Town to Tarka Holiday Park. This multi award winner of Britain in Bloom is the oldest Borough in the Country. A provincial market town with it’’s Victorian Pannier Market still operating daily ( 6 times per week) and the famous Butchers Row. The thirteenth century bridge offers access to national stores and the town itself hides quaint individual shops and modern facilities for indoor and outdoor shopping. The Queens Theatre has a year long programme of varied and interesting performances, many visiting stars and performers amazed at the support and encouragement offered by North Devon’’s discerning population. The town has a wide variety of quaint and interesting eating houses, restaurants, fast-food outlets all combined to give the visitor selection and value for money during their stay.
